Social Impact
What can I do?
After screenings, the first question we hear from the audience is, “What can I do?'“ It’s a great question, and I’m always grateful to hear it! The goal of this film was to invite an audience to see the humanity in people experiencing homelessness in their communities. I wanted to challenge people’s ideas of who was living in the tents they pass each day. I wanted to inspire compassion, effect change, and make a positive impact for both housed and unhoused San Francisco residents. I have heard from 100s of people that the film succeeded in changing their preconceived notions, and more importantly, their behavior towards those living on the street. Please join us in this movement towards compassion and kindness!
Below are some immediate actions you can take today to improve the lives of your unhoused neighbors, and make a positive difference in your own life! I promise your heart will expand!
Make eye contact, smile, and say, “hello,” to anyone you encounter living on the street. Don’t be surprised if they respond, “Thank you,” instead of “Hello.” This may be the warmest human interaction of their day.
Consider creating and distributing care packs that contain flushable baby wipes, laundry detergent pods, hand sanitzer, fist aid kits, shampoo and conditioner, soap, toothbrush and toothpaste, and for women, feminine hygiene products. Perhaps go a step further and ask the recipients of your generosity if there is anything else that would be helpful to include in a future care pack.
Carry some snacks with you, or in your car, that you can provide anyone asking for food.
Socks! Socks are constantly needed and appreciated.
